MTECH is the latest team to confirm its plans to contest the 2011 Avon Tyres British GT Championship – and the great news for supercar fans is that the race-winning squad will be fielding two of Ferrari’s latest GT3 challenger, the 458 Italia.
This year’s third-place championship finishers, Matt Griffin and Duncan Cameron, are the confirmed drivers of one of the MTECH 458s, and they will also contest the FIA GT3 Championship. “It’s an amazing programme for 2011,” says Griffin, who claimed three race wins alongside Cameron in British GT this season. “We want to win British GT and to be contenders in FIA GT3.”
MTECH is in negotiation with drivers for its second 458 Italia for both championships, and the Tamworth-based team also plans to field a brace of 2008-specification Ferrari 430s in the new British GT Class B GT3 division, one of which will be crewed by team stalwart John Dhillon and by British GT racewinner Aaron Scott.
Team boss Mike Edmonds said: “We are going to have two cars capable of winning the championship in British GT in 2011 and we want both cars to be challenging in FIA GT3. We had consistently the fastest car overall between qualifying and races in 2010 but unfortunately narrowly missed out on the championship due to bad luck.
“The new Class B championship is a great idea,” he added. “It’s fantastic to welcome Aaron to the team and it’s great news for John be doing British GT. He has been with MTECH from the start but both unfortunately had to have very limited 2010 programmes because of the financial climate. With our knowledge of the 430 GT3, John and Aaron will be looking only at winning that championship.”
The other declared runners for the 2011 Avon Tyres British GT Championship come from the Anglo-American United Autosports team, which will field two Audi R8 LMS sports cars, one to be driven by young Brit Matthew Bell and experienced USA driver Michael Guasch, the other in the hands of Jay Palmer and BTCC race-winner John Bintcliffe.
Championship manager Benjamin Franassovicci said: “I am very excited for 2011 – the foundations are in place for grids to continue to grow as they have in 2010. New teams are confirming as well as existing ones, and a thrilling season is shaping up, not just in GT3 but also in the new GT3 B as well as GT4 and GT Cup.”
